Tips to help you feel confident getting started.

If you’re used to high-intensity workouts or traditional “no pain, no gain” fitness, your first visit to Starlight Embodied might feel like a radical departure. You might be wondering: Do I need special gear? Will I be sweating? What actually happens?

The short answer: We aren’t here to “work out”—we are here to work in.

Somatic movement is about shifting your focus from how your body looks to how your body feels. Here is a look at what you can expect during your first session.

1. A Slower Pace

The first thing you’ll notice is the speed—or lack thereof. To rewire the nervous system and notice deep-seated physical habits, we have to slow down. If we move quickly, we rely on our “autopilot.” By moving slowly and mindfully, we give the brain the time it needs to learn new, more efficient ways of moving.

2. Internal Exploration (The “Sensing”)

In a typical session, you might spend time lying on a mat, sitting, or standing. I will guide you through gentle, rhythmic movements, but the goal isn’t to mimic a perfect shape. Instead, I’ll ask you questions like:

  • “Where do you feel the weight of your pelvis?” * “Can you sense your shoulder blade sliding as you reach?”

  • “What happens to your breath when you move your neck?”

3. “Pandiculation” vs. Stretching

In Somatics, we often use a technique called pandiculation. Think of it like a “cat stretch”—a conscious contraction of a muscle followed by a very slow, controlled release. This is how we “reset” muscles that have been held tight by stress or habit, helping them return to a relaxed, natural length.

4. No Judgment, Just Data

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to feel in a session. Some people feel a deep sense of relaxation immediately; others might feel a bit of fidgety energy or notice areas of “sensory-motor amnesia” (places where the body feels a bit fuzzy or hard to move). All of it is valuable information. We are simply becoming curious observers of our own architecture.

5. The “Somatic Afterglow”

By the end of the session, most clients report feeling “taller,” “lighter,” or more “connected.” You might feel a sense of space in your joints that wasn’t there before, or a quietness in your mind that comes from being fully anchored in your physical self.
